Ljubljana is green, it is a clean and eco-sustainable city, it is no coincidence that in 2016 it was named the Green Capital of Europe. Ljubljana is a recent city because it was rebuilt both after the earthquake of 1511 and after that of 1895.
The first reconstruction gave it a Renaissance touch, the second enriched it with buildings and details in Art Nouveau style; Ljubljana then continued to transform until the years following the Second World War, thanks above all to the Slovenian architect and urban planner Jože Plečnik. Today Ljubljana is a perfect mix of Baroque and Art Nouveau, part Austrian city and part city of east, so much so that some also call it “little Prague”.

Our tour begins by passing through a lively fruit, vegetable and flower market to continue towards the Cathedral of St. Nicholas We will cross the Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most), an Art Noveau masterpiece decorated with dragons, A pleasant walk along the Ljubljanica River to the central square Prešernov trg, then cross the Tromostovje Bridge (the Triple Bridge), one of the most recognizable creations of architect Jože Plečnik. You will continue towards Ribji trg square, where the oldest building in Ljubljana is located. On the way to the historic center of Ljubljana, we will pass through the Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg squares, whose buildings boast beautiful baroque facades. You will cross the Cobblers’ Bridge (Čevljarski most) and arrive at Novi trg square. From here we head towards Jože Plečnik’s Križanke open-air theater and the famous Baroque-era church of the Knights of the Cross.

After the visit, lunch awaits us in the oldest restaurant in Ljubljana, opened in 1776, which still serves typical Slovenian dishes today.

A short 30-minute journey separates us from the other location Bled, one of the most recognizable images of Slovenia. In the 19th century this location was visited by the hydrotherapy fans of the Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli. At the beginning of the 20th century it was considered one of the most beautiful spa resorts in the Habsburg empire. After the Second World War it hosted one of the main state residences. Villa Bled still serves as a protocol palace today! For centuries, visitors have been reaching the island in the center of the lake with traditional wooden boats – the Bled pletne, which boatmen row while standing.
After mooring, guests can climb the 99 stone steps that lead to the Church of the Assumption of Mary. On the island of legendary stories, listen to the church bell and ring it yourself. According to one of the stories, doing so makes your wishes come true. Returning from the island you can still admire it from the castle on the cliff and from the walking paths and refuges that run around the lake. Take a ride on the carriages of the fijakerji, the typical Bled coachmen!
